The Easy Cheeseburger Pie recipe was inspired by the “Impossible Cheeseburger Pie” recipe on the Bisquick box.
Note that the baking powder, cheese, and milk all contribute to the sodium in the this recipe. I reduced the backing powder and added bell pepper and other spices to give enough flavor so that no one in our family missed the salt. I also used sharp cheddar (instead of the cheddar or Velveeta found in similar recipes) to give additional flavor that allowed us to reduce the amount of cheese and sodium as compared to similar recipes. The result was a low-sodium, flavorful, very easy recipe.
- 1 lb very lean ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- ½ cup bell pepper, chopped
- 4 oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup all-purpose flour OR white whole wheat flour
- ¾ tsp low-sodium baking powder
- 1 tsp Mrs Dash Steak Grilling seasoning
- ½ tsp dry mustard
- 1 cup skim milk
- 2 Tbsp vegetable oil, plus more to oil the pie pan.
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly oil the bottom and sides of a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan or a 10-inch pie pan with vegetable oil.
- Cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper over medium high heat until meat is brown and cooked through (no pink inside). Drain off the fat. Set aside.
- Whisk together flour, baking powder, Mrs Dash Steak Grilling Seasoning, dry mustard, and pepper in a medium bowl. Slowly add in milk, whisking to combine. Then whisk in the vegetable oil and eggs.
- Add ½ of cheese to meat mixture and stir to combine. Spoon in meat mixture. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top of the meat. Slowly pour the milk/flour mixture evenly over the pie.
- Bake for 25-35 minutes, or until the pie is golden brown and bubbly. Remove from oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

– 10% of the American Heart Association recommendation of 1,500 mg sodium per day, or
– 15% of the Ménière’s diet recommendation of 1,000 mg sodium per day.
