Traditional Alfredo sauce is made with heavy cream and butter. This provides a lower-fat, lower-sodium alternative for recipes that call for Alfredo sauce.
Alfredo sauce substitute
Ingredients
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Optional: 2 tsp olive oil plus ¼ cup diced onion
- 3 Tbsp Flour
- 1-1/2 cup skim milk
- 1 tsp Italian Seasoning
- ⅛ tsp ground black pepper.
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- In a small bowl, stir vigorously the flour and milk. When the flour and milk is well blended, add the Italian seasoning and pepper. Stir well.
- If you use the optional onion: In a small sauce pan, heat the olive oil to medium high. Optional: saute the onion in the olive oil for 3-4 minutes, until the onion is translucent. Then add the minced garlic and saute for another 30 seconds.
- If you don't use the optional onion, add the garlic to the milk mixture.
- Add the milk mixture to the saucepan. Cook and stir using medium high heat until the sauce is thickened and just beginning to boil. Then, stir in the Parmesan cheese. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1-2 minutes until thickened.
